CDC
Century Dance Complex

Century Dance Complex was founded in April 2006, but CDC's rich history can best be understood by its founder and Executive Director, Rose Kingston.  A 27-year-old Liberian native, Ms. Kingston is a survivor of a ten-year civil war. After living in the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana for six years, she was granted asylum to the United States with her family in 1996.  Once in the US, Rose became fascinated with the different dance styles that she wasn't exposed to in Africa. She began her dance training at Sheepshead Bay H. S. in Brooklyn. Rose loved dancing so much and wanting to expand even more that she landed herself a full scholarship at the Harlem School of the Arts, and The Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. Later Rose won a choreography contest which led to her studying Dance at Long Island University in Brooklyn.

She has danced, taught workshop, and choreographed professionally for many years, YMCA, Girls Scout, Staten Island academy, The Brearley School amongst others. After a very successful dance career in New York and Hollywood, Ms. Kingston became a youth advocate, dedicating her life to helping under-privileged and refugee youth to become contributing members in their community through the art she calls her silent therapy: "DANCE".

CDC's mission is to develop youth of diverse backgrounds into contributing members of their community, through arts and culture, educational support, job readiness, and community outreach. "Reading difficulty contributes to failing grades, low self-esteem, eventually leading to potential dropout." For all children learning should be fun, CDC's goal is to empower youth to always be eager to learn. CDC uses performing Arts (Dance, Acting, Arts & Craft, and Drumming) as a tool to make learning exciting. CDC provides homework supervision to allow students to build respect for their academic education. CDC strives to instill discipline, build confidence, and to expose the youth to a world beyond their imagination.
